10 Tips for new teachers by Kati Casto

The last october 20th,2017. Kati Casto from English Language Fellow bring us some tips to give a good class and how teachers can improve her way to teach a class.

1) Get excited about the class or content of the class
The teacher need to be contagious with the topic and also be excited with the class because when teachers give a class is important that they feel related with the topic that they are sharing with the students. Also, teachers need to give the time to students in which students talk what they are learning in class.

2) Create a lesson structure that works for you and follow it consistently
She mentioned that as a teacher we need to have an objective with an agenda before to teach a class besides it important take into account what as a teachers DO, what students DO during the class and with their classmates, and what students Do by themself  in this way teachers develop a good class.

3) Command respect from your students
She said that teacher need to teach their students how to treat you and others also, it is important that teachers create a code of conduct because if teachers fall their respect it is hard to recover. She gave an example that in her classes she always expect that her students enter to the class and follow her instructions. Another important thing is that teacher shows to students and create  the classroom rules with them.

4) Give students leadership opportunities and other responsabilities
Teachers in their classes need to distribute  the students led activities also the role of the students when  they work in group. Moreover, as a teacher need to give the opportunity to students to express their opinions and teach some activities during the class. Teachers need to think what classroom responsabilities can you give to student? - Support other classmates  - trash responsability.

5) Incorporate VAK-visual,auditory,kinesthetic in every lesson
Visual: links, colours, map, pictures and structures.
Auditory: talk throught, words, read through, listen to voice.
Kinesthetic: compiling, highlight, building work throught and mark off.
Every student has her or him learning style and it is important that students practice all the skill because in this way they identify which is her/him learning style also some teachers have their own teaching style too, but it is important that teachers include VAK in every class.

6) Plan questions based on knowledge goals
The teachers need to think what should the student be able to do at the end of the class also which skills are students developing through each activity or make an outline like What, Who and How the teachers and students Do.

7) Evaluate using rubrics
The teacher need to create their own rating system and share the rubric before, during, and after an assigment to clarify what he/she expect from a homework.

8) Collect and use data
The teacher need to check if students are understanding during the class through exams, survey also this help to determine prior knowledge. Furthermore, you can use diferrent material to noticed if students are understanding like fingers numbers and paper colors.

9) Take time to reflect and adjust
After the teacher gave a class need to think and reflect what did good in the class, think if during the class when students were confused, which things need to re-teach in the following class and how the teacher will teach differently the next class.

10) Encourage a growth mindset
It was an interesting meeting fortunately, now i know which type of questions ask me before and after to teach a class also how to check for understanding it is a helpful information.

This was a good experience because, as future teachers we'll have to face the situations mentioned in the conference sooner or later, and it would be good to reflex about the tips of this conference, they will probably will be useful in the rest of our careers and practices and even beyond them.
